Space Invaders was a 1978 created by Tomohiro Nishikado. It was manufactured and sold by Taito in Japan.

Space Invaders was the first 'fixed shooter', which created the template for the shoot 'em up genre. The aim was to destroy waves of descending aliens with a moving laser.

Space Invaders was a massive commercial success. Space Invaders is without doubt, one of the most influential video games ever.

The pixelated enemy aliens have become pop culture icons on their own, often representing video games as a whole.

Designer Nishikado got his inspiration from games such as 1976's Breakout, as well as science fiction stories such as The War of the Worlds, and Star Wars.
